Joop Goudsblom passed away
It is with deep regret that we have to announce that Johan (Joop) Goudsblom passed away on March 17 at the age of 87. He was a professor of sociology at the University of Amsterdam from 1968 until his retirement in 1997. Later, he became an honorary member of the Dutch Sociological Association, NSV. He was not only the founder of contemporary Amsterdam sociology, but was also the founder of the Amsterdam School for Social Science Research (today the Amsterdam Institute for Social Research). As a historical sociologist, Joop was crucial in propagating, disseminating and further developing Norbert Elias’ figurative sociology. His own books (Nihilism and Culture, Fire and Civilization) had a lot of resonance and were translated into different languages. In addition, he was also active in literature as an avid writer of aphorism and founder of the literary magazine Tirade. In the Dutch newspaper NRC of 24 March 2020, Abram de Swaan wrotea portrait of Joop that we would like to share. On behalf of the NSV, we wish the family, friends and colleagues of Joop Goudsblom a lot of strength during this difficult time.
Annual Meeting Dag van de Sociologie 2020 is cancelled
The most recent developments concerning the coronavirus determine our daily reality deeply. The by the government implemented measures to control the virus are becoming increasingly strict, both in the Netherlands and in Belgium, and now extend to June 1, 2020. It will not surprise anyone that under these circumstances we are planning the Day of Sociology, planned on May 28, 2020 in Leuven, is cancelled.
We would like to thank everyone who has made an effort to prepare and contribute to the Annual Meeting 2020. We want to encourage the submitters of papers to offer them to one of the sociology journals in the Low Countries. Those who submitted papers or session proposals will be notified separately where appropriate. We are already looking forward to the Annual Meeting Dag van de Sociologie 2021. More news about this event will be communicated in due time via the appropriate channels, including the NSV and VVS websites.
We hope that everyone stays healthy and that we can stop the virus through our individual and collective efforts. A truly sociological endeavour.

Deadline CfP Dag van de Sociologie Extended
On May 28, the Annual Meeting of the Dutch and Flemish Sociological Associations, Dag van de Sociologie, will take place at KU Leuven. The deadline to submit paper proposals has been extended to March 20, 2020. More information can be retrieved from the flyer. Paper proposals can be submitted through this form.
