De NSV bekroont eenmaal per twee jaar de beste sociologische dissertatie die in de twee voorafgaande jaren aan een Nederlandse universiteit is verdedigd.
De NSV Dissertatieprijs 2017 ging naar de auteur van een proefschrift dat verdedigd is aan de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam, begeleid is door de hoogleraren Johan Heilbron en Paul Wouters (Leiden) , als titel draagt ‘Stuying the Dutch business elite: relational concepts and methods’ en is geschreven door Rob Timans. Voor de jaren 2015 en 2016 waren de volgende zeven dissertaties voorgedragen:

- Femke Roosma A Multidimensional Perspective on the Social Legitimacy of Welfare States in Europe. Tilburg University.
- Rob Timans Studying the Dutch Business Elite. Relational Concepts and Methods. Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam.
